Sustainable Income Generation Program
Milking cows were distributed to orphan families in Kunar province! On November 28 of this year, in the Noorgal district of Kunar province, 15 eligible orphan families received milking cows distributed by the Orphan Care Afghanistan Welfare Organization. This distribution was carried out in full coordination with the provincial Departments of Agriculture and Economy, and in the presence of district officials and community elders. Through a proper survey process, those orphan families were selected who met all the program requirements, and the cows were allocated to them through a transparent lottery process. The Milking cows distribution program of the Orphan Care Afghanistan Welfare Organization was launched in 2022. With this latest distribution, a total of 187 Milking cows have been provided to orphan families in need across various provinces of the country. The program is continuously evaluated and has so far delivered significant economic benefits to the supported families. All 15 cows were purchased transparently from the open market by the organization. The average cost of each cow is around 50,000 Afghanis. Each cow produces approximately 7 kilograms of milk per day, enabling the orphan families to consume fresh milk and also generate a daily income through its sale. The objective of this program is to help orphan households gradually achieve economic self-reliance and open the door to a dignified livelihood.

Second Component of the Program:
In 2023, we helped 16 orphans establish small businesses, each costing around 20,000 AFN. When we evaluated the program, it was revealed that by the end of the year, each business owner had earned profits five times greater than their original capital.
Based on these successful results, in July 2024, the founder of the Orphan Care Afghanistan, Dr. Abdul Baqi Mehraban, decided to expand the program and set specific criteria for it.
This part of the program was launched under the title of Qarz-e-Hasana (Interest-Free Loan), which provides small loans to start businesses. Eligible orphans or their guardians who have business skills or vocational expertise but lack tools are identified through surveys. The loan is repaid gradually within 10 months to 2 years.
The steps are as follows:
1. Surveying and selecting eligible families.
2. Completing all administrative procedures, including guarantee letters.
3. Providing short business training.
4. Establishing the business together with the beneficiary based on their skills, interest, and market opportunities.
The borrower repays a fixed monthly installment through the bank.
Up to September 2025, 156 orphan families have been supported through this program with small businesses worth nearly 3.5 million AFN. So far, more than 1 million AFN has already been repaid into our bank account by the beneficiaries.
This program continues to grow and expand.
